OVIEDO, FL – January 17, 2020: Yesterday at the United Soccer Coaches Convention in Baltimore, Maryland, two Florida Krush players were drafted into the NWSL (National Women’s Soccer League). Konya Plummer and Camryn Biegalski, who both played for the Krush in the WPSL (Women’s Premier Soccer League) during the summer of 2018, now join Carrie Lawrence and Khadija “Bunny” Shaw as Krush players who have been signed or drafted by a professional soccer club.
With the first pick of the second round, and tenth overall, the Orlando Pride selected Konya Plummer from the University of Central Florida. Plummer, a center back, became the first Jamaican player ever drafted into the NWSL. After captaining Jamaica at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Plummer went on to win the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year for UCF.
“I am just grateful for this opportunity to pursue soccer at a professional level,” Plummer said. “It would not have been possible without the help of my coaches and teammates. Just playing in the WPSL particularly for the Krush has helped me to develop as a player. I not only have improved physically but mentally. The coaching staff was and is amazing.”
Six picks later the Chicago Red Stars selected Camryn Biegalski, a defender from the University of Wisconsin. In her senior year as a Badger, Biegalski started all 22 games, scoring one goal and tallying two assists.
Joining Plummer at the Orlando Pride is Carrie Lawrence who last week became the first female homegrown player from Florida Kraze Krush to sign a professional contract. Lawrence, another grad from UCF, made 49 appearances for the Knights scoring four goals and 11 assists. “I couldn’t have asked for a better environment to shape me into the player and person I am today,” Lawrence said when speaking about her time with FKK. “[Coach Menzies] has created something that is very special and will have a positive impact on every players life on and off the field.”
Florida Kraze Krush was one of only six clubs to have more than one player associated with them be drafted and the only club in Florida. Gabriella English and Ru Mucherera were two other FKK athletes who declared themselves eligible for the draft. FKK now has six players associated with them who have turned professional, with the girls joining Phil D’Amico (Chattanooga FC) and Eli Lockaby (Richmond Kickers).
